When it comes to telling great, imaginative children's stories, let's leave that to Pixar and Disney. I'm done pretending your child's education is in a satisfactory state, and you should be done pretending too.
If your child is currently falling behind in school, I have a very uncomfortable, likely inconvenient non-fiction truth to share with you:
The school system wasn't built to save your child, and your current "Ad libbing," "outsourcing," " playing it by ear" parenting philosophy is failing them the most.
If I had a dollar for every time a parent reached out in absolute panic, completely lacking self-awareness, treating a bad report card like an unexplainable act of God, I'd be on Instagram telling you how I became a millionaire. You know I'd be just another of the influencers you doomscroll daily rather than doing something about the horrendous, gloomy future your laissez-faire form of parenting is fating your child to.
Whom am I talking to? Well, you know who you are. You hire $50-an-hour tutors, issue empty threats about grounding, you drink $10 lattes, obsess about getting Lil' man to the 'League', purchase expensive homes in so-called good school districts, throw pity parties about how busy your life is, criticize the fruit (children) without ever examining the tree (you), give your children everything and think that's a substitute for engagement, and pray for a miracle without knowing that faith without works is dead.
If the shoe fits those descriptions above, I hope you know you must wear it. It's time to apply good common sense and agree that you need to do something different.
You don't have to believe me; ask Albert Einstein, who famously said: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Per Dr. Einstein, you, more importantly, your children need a break from the same old, same old. What you are doing right now is insanity.
If my father were here with us in the flesh and not just in the spirit, he would call you names far less polite than insane. He cared about people's feelings much less than I do. He'd also approach any discussion with you about your child's academic standing, applying the Socratic method. He would ask you things like:
- Why are you asking for an archaic 1st Industrial Revolution education model to fix a child preparing for the 4th Industrial Revolution?
- And why are you expecting a 45-minute weekly tutoring session to undo 168 hours of structural neglect at home?
- How are you so committed to the long-term process for athletic success but do not apply the same strategy to academic performance?
We are not life coaches—we are human developmental engineers. At The League of Extraordinary Parents (LEP), we do not deal in transient expressions such as "know your why," "feelings of self-pity," or "fairy tale hype" about what you are going to do but have no plan for doing anything.
LEP is here to keep you from parenting like ordinary parents. Extraordinary children are proactively cultivated by parents who are intentionally extraordinary.
Hardship, low grades, poor test scores, and academic failure are not barriers to future success, permission for a pity party, or time to imagine away reality to make yourself feel good—rather, they are the raw fuel and empirical proof that your home system needs a total redesign. Regrettably, few parents understand this and instead raise children completely by accident:
- Reacting to bad grades.
- Reacting to bad behavior.
- Reacting to people.
- Reacting to things outside our control.
- Reacting to life.
- Reacting to everything.
If your child is falling behind, throw away the "good vibes" about yourself mantra, stop with the temper-tantrum accusation that "the school is failing you," reject the "blame the child exclusively" parenting advice, and execute these four engineered system upgrades immediately:
1. Ditch Reactive Tutoring—Implement "Backward Design"
When a child falls behind in algebra or reading, parents reflexively hire a tutor to fix this week's test. That's like mopping the floor while the sink is still overflowing.
In our Life Template™ framework, we design development backward from the end to the present. We start by answering three fundamental questions:
- Whom must the child become?
- What capabilities must be developed?
- What contribution will the child make?
When you map success milestones backward from adulthood to today, a failing grade in 7th-grade math isn't an isolated emergency; it's an early indicator of a gap in Intellectual Ambition.
The Fix: Stop treating the grade; fix the foundational gap through three distinct stages of Backward Design:
- Familiarity: Expose them to concepts, books, and environments outside the classroom before the school introduces them.
- Mastery: Enforce deliberate, disciplined practice daily—not just when an exam is looming.
- Core: Integrate learning into their actual character until problem-solving becomes who they are, not just something they do for an 'A', sticker, award, money, or gold star.
2. Re-Engineer Your Child's "Starting Five™"
Look at the five people who spend the most time around your child right now. Are they an intellectual catalyst, or are they a collective anchor keeping your child in mediocrity?
The old proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child."
Intentional parents say, "I am the architect of that village."
You cannot expect a burnt-out school counselor managing 400 students to build an individualized blueprint for your child. You must intentionally recruit your child's Starting Five™—a curated inner circle of mentors, elite educators, and role models who demand excellence.
The Fix: Fire the passive influences in your child's network. Actively recruit mentors who embody the intellectual ambition, global competency, and moral character you expect your child to internalize. If you don't curate their environment, society will—and society isn't trying to send your kid to Carnegie Mellon or NYU Stern debt-free.
3. Practice Zealous Advocacy (Z.A.P.™), Not Passive Complaining
Too many parents treat the education system like a restaurant: they sit back, wait for whatever is served, and if it tastes bad, they leave a quiet complaint.
The home is the primary engine of a child's development. Educators say all the time, "Parents are a child's first teacher." Institutional failures like the Educational Industrial Complexes happen precisely when parents act like bystanders. Parents who don't understand the requirements of being their child's first teacher fail children who are struggling academically.
If your child is falling behind, you do not march into the school crying, yelling, and screaming, pointing fingers and blaming others, nor do you sit in silence. You activate Zealous Advocacy (Z.A.P.™). You walk into that school with data, an engineered plan, and the uncompromising posture of a parent who will not allow their child to become another statistic of coordinated societal failure.
The Fix: Stop asking the school, "What are you going to do about my kid's grades?"
Start asserting: "Here is our home-based Academic Success Strategy. Here are the specific resources and accommodations this institution must provide to align with our vision for our child’s life."
4. Expand Their Worldview Beyond "Life's Buffet Table"
Why do kids fall behind? Often, it's not a lack of intelligence; it's a total lack of vision.
Life is a massive buffet table.
- Prepared children have the capabilities, discipline, and intellectual ambition to walk up to the table and choose their path.
- Unprepared children sit passively at the booth and accept whatever cold scraps are placed on their plate.
When a child doesn't see how 8th-grade physical science connects to building clean energy infrastructure or mastering multilingual fluency, they check out.
The Fix: Anchor their current academic struggle to a high-stakes, real-world contribution. Build their Global and Cultural Competency and Humanitarian Responsibility. Show them that mastering their current work isn't about pleasing a teacher; it is about equipping them with the tools required to make a massive contribution to the world.
The Choice Before You
You can continue doing what average parents do: blame the teachers, buy another workbook, yell at the dinner table, focus their time, energy, and finances disproportionately on sports, tell themselves it's not that bad, pretend someone else is going to love your child like you, and pray things at school magically get better.
Or you can step up, stop the delusion, stop outsourcing, stop finger-pointing and blaming everybody else, and become an intentional engineer of your child's destiny.
Extraordinary outcomes—whether that's PhD attainment, multilingual fluency, or acceptance into top-tier universities without relying on wealth, privilege, legacy status, or debt—are not one-in-a-billion miracles.
They are the predictable return on investment of a deliberate system.
Your child isn't broken. Your child isn't a failure. Your system is disastrous. Fix YOUR parenting system.
Look in the Mirror:
What is one area in your home environment where you've been "ad libbing", "going with the flow", "outsourcing your parental rights and responsibilities" instead of operating by design, parenting intentionally? Drop your thoughts below—let's talk about it.
Are you ready to stop raising your child by accident? Are you ready to stop being another parent in the long line of parents who try to mitigate their failures by saying things like, "When it comes to parenting, you know there's no manual"?
Hopefully, you are ready to move from what ordinary parents do to what extraordinary parents do. Learn how The League of Extraordinary Parents helps families, educators, and school districts transform good intentions into extraordinary, engineered outcomes.
